A Non Governmental Organisation, Come Alive Initiative has attributed the increasing use of hard drugs by youths to lack of mentorship in most communities.
The NGO’s National Coordinator, Mr Victor Enwezor made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Enugu.
According to him, his organisation will embark on the sensitisation of the youth in the South-East as well as mentors.
Enwezor said that the NGO would be talking with the guardians and teachers, who act as mentors of youth, to stem the rate at which young people use drugs.
“We want to stage a situation where we would be able to talk to teachers, church leaders and even parents, those who these young people see as mentors, to see how best and how well we can get people out of drug abuse and hard drug use.
“The idea of talking with parents, teachers or church leaders is because they usually hang-out or stay more often with these young people.

“So we need to expose them to some certain traits or characters that they will see and be able to observe that a particular child or young man had started abusing drugs or engaging in hard drug use,’’ he said.
According to him, we are looking forward to partnering with international organisations, embassies and various government agencies to be able to carry out this all important task which has to be done for the good of our society.
“At present, we do not have any external partnership and the truth is we are open to such if it eventually comes up.
“All hands need to be on deck to clean up our society of the menace of drug abuse, peddling, trafficking and cultivation in its entirety,’’ he added.
