State Govt. terminates contract with waste contractors

The Oyo State Government on Thursday announced the termination of its contract with all private waste contractors effective from May 5.

The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Toye Arulogun, made announcement in a statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan.

He said that the government has handed over the mandate for the evacuation of waste to Oyo State Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA).

He added that the decision was in line with the commitment of the government to ensure  cleaner and healthier environment for its citizens.

Arulogun said the government had commissioned West Africa ENRG, a leading environmental solution company in Nigeria, to manage the activities OYOWMA

According to the commissioner, the ENRG will also be in charge of the operational and legal duties of OYOWMA.

He said that the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources would play key role in the regulation and oversight functions of all issues pertaining to disposal of solid waste in the state.

The commissioner said that West Africa ENRG had been charged to undertake re-organisation of waste collection, processing and disposal in the state.

Arulogun urged the citizens, groups, civil societies and communities to partner with the government to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment.

He expressed the hope that the concerted efforts of all and sundry would make the state a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing environment.

He called on residents and business owners to dispose their waste in waste bins and refrain from dropping them on the roads.
