Tony Asuquo and Helen Ocheke were on Monday elected as technical and athletes’ representatives on the board of the Gymnastics Federation of Nigeria (GFN).
Asuquo, who is of the FCT, defeated John Abiodun from Lagos 23-12 while Edo’s Ocheke defeated Chinedu Ajero of Lagos 51-0 at the Abuja National Stadium.
The elections lasted for four hours due to the screening of eligible voters and manifesto presentation.
Excited at the result, Asuquo who defeated Abiodun who was his coach during his days as an athlete assured gymnasts of a turnaround in the federation.
“I have two goals as the technical representative on the board. One is to get Nigeria to the Olympics, and second is to ensure we are top in African gymnastics.
“Every child in Nigeria must know about gymnastics because we will take grassroots development seriously.
“Monies sent from the international body will be accounted for with regards to the competitions we will be organising, “he added.
On her part, Ocheke who is ranked number 15 in the sport in Africa said she would do her best to represent gymnasts effectively.
