Internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nigeria’s northeast

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCRMI) has presented building materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Adamawa.

Presenting the materials to the state government on Friday in Yola, the Federal Commissioner for NCRMI, Hajiya Sadiya Umar, said the gesture  was in line with the commission’s duties to offer succour to victims of conflicts and  disasters.

“The commission remains fully committed to keying into the recovery plans for the North East Zone as envisioned by his Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The provision of these materials today therefore does not reflect the totality of our interventions.

“ Rather,  we wish to demonstrate our support for the Adamawa State Government in its efforts to provide the necessary social services for IDPs and communities, ” Umar said.

She said that the commission had also embarked on a massive empowerment pilot projects  in the North East Zone for IDPs in camps and vulnerable persons in host communities.

“We identified key projects that we felt would contribute to the psycho-socio-economic wellbeing of affected persons and their communities  and carried out skills acquisition training  followed by empowerment of beneficiaries.

“The identified projects are based on sustainable models and on Mr  President’s vision of local production and consumption such as waste to wealth initiatives, agriculture and agro-processing initiatives and manufacturing.

” We believe that these projects have the potential of raising the income of the beneficiaries and subsequently enabling them to provide a better standard of living for themselves and their families,’’ she said.

While reiterating the commitment of the commission to creating  opportunities for those targeted, Umar  said that the commission would open zonal and field offices in the North East Zone for effective service delivery.

Responding on behalf of  the state government, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Ahmadu Waziri, commended  the commission for the gesture.

He gave an assurance that the items would be judiciously utilised.
