Children’s Day: 115 Schools, 11 NGOs Celebrate In Oyo

No fewer than 115 schools and 11 Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) participated in the Children’s Day celebration in Ibadan on Saturday.

58 primary schools, 57 secondary schools and 11 NGOs participated in the traditional march.

NAN also reports that food vendors at the various fun and recreation outlets in the metropolis made brisk business.

Speaking at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, one of the venues for the celebration, Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State said that the nation would benefit immensely if parents instill sound morals in their wards.

Ajimobi, who condemned violence against children, said inhumane and barbaric tradition negatively affecting children would no longer be tolerated.

“The current trend of violence through child trafficking, child forced marriages, sex exploitation and abduction would no longer be condoned,’’ he said.

The governor had during his visit to Agodi Gardens to celebrate with the children, reiterated his administration’s commitment to the protection of children.

He said that his administration would continue to evolve policies and initiatives aimed at grooming children for success.

Earlier, Master Akinyele Olanrewaju , had stated that there was need for deliberate measures by the society to protect children.

Olanrewaju, who spoke on behalf of the children, said taking care of children amounted to taking care of the future of the society and the human race.

“The protection of the child and the promotion of their well-being are closely linked to development and the well-being of the society.

“Violence against children, like child labour, takes place more in the developing countries and can have devastating long term impact on the well-being of children as well as the progress of the society,’’ he said.

Command Children School, Odogbo Ibadan emerged winner of the march event in the primary school category while Glorified Nursery and Primary School and St. Stephens Nursery and Primary School came second and third respectively.

Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan, emerged winner of the march event in the secondary school category while Ibadan Grammar School, Molete and TMM Secondary School, Orita-Challenge, emerged second and third respectively.
