Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo has advised children to work hard in their academic pursuits in order to be successful in life.

Okorocha, who gave the piece of advice during the 2017 Children’s Day celebration in Owerri on Saturday, said education was necessary for children to improve on their capabilities.

He stressed that the future of children should not be compromised and reiterated his commitment to providing free and qualitative education in the state.

The governor also prayed for God’s blessings on the children and their teachers.

Earlier, Mrs Ngozi Njoku, the Commissioner for Health, Women Affairs and Social Development, said the state government was determined to tackle the problem of child abuse and trafficking.

Njoku called on the public to report all such cases and stressed that no effort would be spared to ensure the safety of children in the state.

She also urged the children to make adequate use of the educational opportunities provided to them by the Okorocha-led administration to excel.

Njoku stressed that no child should be deprived of quality education and encouraged parents to send their children to school in spite of the tough economic challenges.

She pointed out that the care and protection of children was the collective responsibility of all and urged the people to do their part.

The event featured presentations by children reflecting the theme of the celebration, “Child Protection and Sustainable Development Goals: Issues and Opportunities”.
