Police arraign 3 men for human trafficking

Three men, Wasiu Saliu, 25; Saliu Afusatu, 57 and Rauf Yekini, 47, on Tuesday, appeared before the Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, for alleged human trafficking.

The Police Prosecutor, Mr Femi Falade, told the court that the defendants committed the offence sometime in January at Ise -Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendants and others still at large, conspired “to procure the illegal exportation and entry of one Abiola Owolabi from Nigeria to Germany via Libya.

“The defendants, during the same period, place and in the aforementioned judicial division, sought for financial benefits and procured illegal entry of Abiola Owolabi, a Nigerian citizen into Libya,’’ he said.

Falade said that the defendants committed an offence punishable under Section 26 (1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition), Law Enforcement Administration Act. (2003) as Amended.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge while their counsel, Mr Israel Oloruntola, prayed the court to release the defendants on bail, promising to provide reliable sureties.

Justice Donatus Okorowo, who presided over the case, consequently granted one million naira bail to the accused persons and one surety in like amount.

He added that the surety must be a civil servant from Grade Level 9 and above.

Okorowo adjourned the case to October 9 for further hearing.
