Microfinance Bank Drags Loan Defaulter To Court

The management of Lapo Microfinance Bank, Oshodi, Lagos has dragged an alleged loan defaulter, Mrs. Modupe Marques, 50, before a Lagos Magistrate Court for obtaining a credit facility of N1.5 million by false pretence and refused to refund the money as agreed.

The accused was arrested by policemen from Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos Island following a petition by the management of Lapo Microfinance Bank to the AIG Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, Adamu Ibrahim.

The accused, a resident of Anthony Area of Lagos was arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate Court, Lagos on a 3-count charge of felony to wit, obtaining credit facility by false pretence.

Police prosecutor, ASP Eshiet Eshiet informed the court in charge No L/34/2017 that the accused committed the alleged offence on 17 August, 2016 in Oshodi Area of Lagos.

Eshiet told the court that the accused falsely obtained the sum of N1.5 million as loan with a repayment period of six months but that the accused refused to refund the money as agreed.

He said the accused, on the pretext of paying back the money issued a cheque of N45. 000.00 on 2 February, 2017 in favour of Lapo Microfinance Bank, but that when the cheque was presented in the bank, it was rejected due to lack of funds in the account.

Eshiet said the offences committed were punishable under section 409, 315 and 319 of the criminal laws of Lagos State 2015.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the crime and Magistrate Mrs. A.T Omoyele granted her bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Omoyele adjourned the case till 4 July, 2017.
