The police in Enugu State have warned parents and guardians not to allow under-aged children to dispose of solid wastes in the drains during and after rainfalls to avoid drowning.

Mr Ebere Amaraizu, the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State, said the warning had become necessary to avoid the recurrence of drowning incident such as that of a seven-year-old girl Ezinne Eze of Ugwuachara Road, Nsukka recently.

In a statement he issued in Enugu on Saturday, he recalled that the incident happened on June 16 when the girl was allegedly directed to dispose of refuse during a rainfall.

“It was recorded that the deceased, who had gone to dump refuse in a gutter on that fateful day during a downpour, could not be seen, thereby forcing relations to go out in search of her.

“The search could not yield result until June 18 when Ezinne’s body later found and buried,’’ he said.

He said the police had begun an investigation into the incident.

Some concerned residents of Enugu have, however, observed that it has become a practice for most residents of the state to dump refuse in the drains and other waterways before, during and after rainfalls.
