Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  on Monday said it designated 11 additional centres in Borno to facilitate the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

INEC’s Administrative Secretary in the state, Alhaji Abdullahi Buba, made the disclosure at a news conference in Maiduguri on progress made in the ongoing registration.

Buba said the measure became imperative to mobilise participation in the exercise, particularly in areas liberated from insurgents.

He explained that the centres were in Askira Uba, Bama, Biu, Damboa, Gwoza, Jere, Konduga, Mobbar and Ngala local governments.

He said the commission deployed 190 personnel to the 38 registration centres in the state, adding that the exercise recorded remarkable success since it began in April in the 27 local governments of the state.

He revealed that 47,572 eligible voters were registered, 8,105 had their cards replaced and 20,043 cards distributed in the exercise.

He added that “we have a balance of 73 233 unclaimed Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). The cards have been here since 2015; some of the registered voters have been displaced or missing and they never showed up.”

According to him, the CVR is hitch-free.

He said “we are working strictly in compliance with electoral laws governing the conduct of the exercise.”

The secretary called on the people to cooperate with registration personnel to further facilitate smooth conduct of the exercise.
