The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Mr Najeem Salaam, has commiserated with flood victims in Lagos, Oyo, Niger and states of the country; saying the incident was disheartening.

Mr Goke Butika, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the speaker, stated this in a statement on Monday in Osogbo.

Salaam who noted that the incident was unfortunate, said the state identified with the families of the victims who lost their lives and properties.

The speaker advised the governments of the affected states to set up palliative measures for the victims who lost their properties but were lucky to be alive.

Salaam, however, commended the Osun Government for the flood control measures it put in place ahead of the rainy season.

He said that the measures had proved to be effective.

According to the speaker, it is good news that the perennial loss of lives and properties to flood has become history in the state.

He said the removal of Osun from the flood-prone states was a product of strategic thinking and political will of Gov. Rauf Aregbesola’s led- administration and the state parliament, which passed the extant environmental law.

Salaam, however, urged the state Ministry of Environment to improve on its efforts of clearing the drainage systems, road median, waterways and street corners in the state.

He said that saving lives and properties was a fundamental principle of any government.

The speaker also advised the residents of the state to stop dumping refuse on the road median or littering the waterways with their waste.

He said that their doing so would allow for a free flow of water and save lives and properties.
