Two unemployed men, Olusegun Odakale and Abiola Adeyemo on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrate’s’ Court for allegedly threatening to kill a market leader.

Odakale, 72, and Adeyemo, 40, whose addresses were not stated, are being tried for breach of peace, conspiracy and threat to life.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, told court that the accused committed the offences on July 5 at Abibat Mogaji Market, Oko-Oba, Agege, near Lagos.

He said that the accused and others still at large, conspired to threaten to kill a market leader, Mrs Risikat Eniola.

“The accused stormed the market, threatened to kill the complainant if she refused to leave the market for them,’’ the prosecutor stated.

Awase said the accused caused a breach of the peace by creating unrest in the market.

“The accused were telling traders to stop paying market levies and dues to the complainant but that they should be paying to them.

“The accused were trying to hijack the management of the market from the complainant by instigating the traders to cause bridge of the peace in the market,’’ Awase further told court.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 56,166 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Section 56 attracts one-year jail term for threat to life.

The duo, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mr J.A. Adigun, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100, 000 each with two sureties each as part of the bail condition.

He said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until Aug. 22 for mention.
