Gov. Muhammad Badaru of Jigawa State

The Consumer Protection Council (CPC) in Jigawa on Thursday said it destroyed adulterated food items worth over five million naira in 2016.

Its Chairman, Alhaji Farouk Abdallah, disclosed this in Dutse.

Abdallah said that the items destroyed were confiscated from traders across the state between January and December.

He said that the items included grains mixed with sawdust and sesame seeds mixed with sharp sand.

The others were “Zobo”, a leaf used in producing local soft drink, animal feed adulterated with with rice tusk, expired drugs and contraband.

The chairman, therefore, warned traders to desist from adulterating food items because of its harmful effects on the people.

According to him, the agency will not relent in combating circulation of unwholesome and fake products in the state.

Abdallah said that any trader found perpetrating the act would face the wrath of the law.

He assured that the committee would continue to ensure that items bought in the state were from genuine manufacturers and safe.

“It is part of our statutory responsibilities to ensure that the state is safe from all forms of adulterated foods, drugs and medical facilities,” he said.
