Emem Ntat, Business Development Manager, Arc Light Foundation, on Tuesday said the use of robots in everyday human activity could help reduce labour-induced stress and also ease ways of doing things.

Ntat, gave insight in Lagos while speaking on the World Robot Olympiad, Nigeria concluded on July 15.

Arc Light Foundation is the foremost robot developer in Nigeria and a company that also sponsors the development of science.

Arc Lights Foundation is the exclusive partner of LEGO in Nigeria and LEGO Education in West Africa and the organisers of the World Robotics Olympiad, an annual event that draws participants from across the world.

LEGO Education organises a yearly challenge for the kids on how they can solve some problems on their own using robots made from LEGO plastic models.

NAN reports that Arc Light Foundation collaborated with the British International School to stage the global science competition in the school’s hall.

Two schools from Lagos State, Lagos State Model College Meiran and Araromi Ilogbo Junior Secondary, Oke Afo, emerged champions in the senior and junior categories respectively.

By virtue of their performance at the keenly contested competition which tasked their creative intellect, the winners will represent Nigeria at the World Robot Olympiad scheduled for Costa Rica.

The theme of this year’s robotic competition is “Robots for Sustainability’’.

Ntat said that inadequate knowledge of how robots work had hindered its appreciation as a tool to make things better and ease the stress of domestic chores.

“We have yet to appreciate the level at which robots operate just like what is obtained in the advance countries. It is a simple programmable tool that eases our stress to enjoy better.

“Robots can be used in virtually all the spheres of human endeavour; from industrial use to household and commercial uses. They have remained the untapped way we can lessen our labour burdens.

“Robotic science could also be a key player in the economic revival of our country because of its immense benefits. Nigeria can be the launch base for robotic science development in Africa.

“Robots can also be the soul of business in the country though most of us use robots without knowing what we have used. Example is the automated doors at the banking halls,’’ she said.

Ntat said that robots could be used as house help to carry out household chores and could also be used for commercial purposes.

“Robots are affordable and cheaper and have the ability to complete any task giving to it successfully without supervision.

“Robots can provide cool ways of doing household chores such as sweeping the house, dusting and cleaning of window panes and others. Once they are programmed they work independently.

“Robots can also climb steps and clean those places where our hands may not be able to reach. The benefits of using robot is awesome because they can make our environment clean.

“They can also be used without getting injured and they can also work in a hazardous environment because they will make use of artificial intelligent and also communicate with humans,’’ she said.

Ntat said that robots could be used to facilitate transactions and engage in commercial farming and other business activities.

“Robots can do our transactions for us, we use robots as counting machines in the banks and also the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is another perfect example of robots.

“Robots don’t get tired, so, if we are engaging in activities that make us tired, why not engage machines to do them for us and it will be cheaper and better.

“The use of machines can reduce our stress and make us live longer because we are not under duress to complete our tasks.

“Robots can also be used in a commercial setting as they work on remote sensors which are smart enough to understand tasks assigned to them through our inputs,’’ she said.

Ntat said that use of robots could engender employment opportunities for all, adding that use of robots remained an untapped source of wealth for the teeming Nigerian youths.

“The use of robots is still new in Nigeria, but, there are lots of opportunities that come with its acceptability in the society because it can create wealth.

“The young graduates seeking employments can tap into the use of robots for employment. Many schools are now in need of robotic trainers and engineers.

“Robotic trainers are not necessarily graduate engineers, they can come from any field, the requirement is just training on the use of robots and how a person can think critically.

“Robotic certification can help in searching for jobs to be robotic tutors and engineers, it is still a large arable land without much workforce,’’ she said.
