Bakers ‎in Ekiti State have attributed the increase in the price of bread to the high cost of flour and other baking ingredients.

Some operators of bakeries in the state, who spoke in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, said rising cost was negatively impacting on the baking industry.

The recent increase in price of bread had sparked outrage among consumers in the state.

Mr Kola Oyewumi, the Managing Director of Beautiful Bite bread in Ado-Ekiti, said that the increase in the price of bread was due to the astronomical increase in the cost of ingredients used in baking bread.

He described bread as an essential commodity being consumed in every home and often affordable.

“We usually buy flour in large quantity and other ingredients, but we can no longer afford the cost because it has gone beyond reach.

‘We are only striving hard to meet people’s demand for the product.

“We have received several complaints from our customers and consumers, but all we can do is just to persuade them to buy with the hope that the price may still come down.

“Our prayer is that the price can still come down because if it continues this way, I am afraid it may soon become a rich man’s food,’’ he said.

A bread seller, Mrs Mojisola Adewole, said that the increase in the price of the product and other food items in the market had affected sales.

She decried the cost of the ingredients which she said had also caused reduction in the quantity of bread being produced.

Adewole appealed to the Federal Government to put measures in place to put the economy on the right path.
