Nigerien Bags N1m Bail For Raping Teenager

A 25-year-old Nigerien, Adamu Alidu, who allegedly abducted and raped a 16-year-old girl, on Friday appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrate’s’ Court, Lagos.
Alidu was, however, released on a bail of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mr Aro Lambo, who gave the ruling, said one of the sureties must be a property owner within the court’s jurisdiction, while the other surety must be a community leader or a cleric.
In addition, the sureties should provide evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
Alidu, a resident of 5, Oremeji St., Itire, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the charges of rape, unlawful sexual intercourse and unlawful detainment.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Anthonia Osayande, told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 17 at his shop at 5, Oremeji St., Itire, at 1.30.p.m.
Osayande said the accused was caught red-handed while having sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old girl.
She alleged that the accused unlawfully detained the girl against her will before raping her.
The offences contravened Sections 135, 137 and 144 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Rape carries a penalty of life imprisonment in Lagos State.
The case was adjourned until Sept. 23 for mention.
