Business woman loses N4 million to fraudsters

A Business woman, Patience Danatie has dragged four suspected fraudsters before a Lagos Magistrate Court for allegedly using her business partner’s voice to collect the sum of N4 million from her under false pretence.

The accused persons are: Samson Owah, 39; Job Akakasi, 26; Oghereworo Benjamin, 42 and Profit Ejimulode, 58.

All the accused were arrested by the operatives of the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, FCIID, Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos and arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos on a four-count charge of felony to wit, stealing.

Police prosecutor, Moruf Animashaun informed the court that the accused persons committed the alleged offence on 4 May, 2017 at Eco Bank Plc, Ikorodu Branch, Lagos.

Animashaun told the court that the complainant reported to the police that a day after she discussed a project with her business partner, one Godspower, the first accused, Samson Owah called her and claimed to be the Godspower she discussed a project with the previous days and directed her to transfer the money for the project as discussed into his account.

Animashaun said that the complainant stated that she believed the caller because his voice was the same with that of Godspower she knew and remitted the sum of N1, 137, 000 and N2, 274, 000 into the account the fake Godspower provided.

He said that the complainant further stated that it later dawn on her that she had been duped when she called Godspower to know if he had received the money she transferred into his account for the project they earlier discussed, adding that Godspower denied receiving any money in his account.

Animashaun alleged that the complainant said she was in shock as to how an outsider knew about the discussion she had with her business partner.

He said during investigation, the first accused Owah allegedly confessed to the crime and led the police to arrest three others.

Animashaun said the offences the accused persons committed were punishable under sections 411, 314 (1) and 287 (5 (1) of the criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

All the accused pleaded not guilty to the alleged crime and the Chief Magistrates, Mrs. O.A komolafe admitted granted them bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Komolafe adjourned the case till 29 August, 2017 for mention, while the defendants were remanded at Ikoyi Prison, Lagos pending when they will fulfill their bail conditions.
