Benue youths urged to acquire skills for self reliance

Mr Jonathan Uever, Special Adviser to Benue Governor, on Bureau for Youth and Sports Development, has urged youths in the state to acquire meaningful skills to beat unemployment and be self reliant.

Uever gave the advice during an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi ahead of the International Youth Day scheduled for Aug. 12.

According to him, this years’ theme, “Youth and Building Peace” was apt for the youth in the state as various programmes had been planned to empower them.

The special adviser said the state government had also created environment that would enable youths realise their entrepreneurial ambition and contribute positively to the social and economic development of the state.

He further said the various the loan schemes being extended to farmers and skilled youths, through the Bank of Industries would aid them to embark on meaningful businesses.

“The Benue Investment and Property Company, Rural Development and Cooperative and the Federal Government Social Investment Programme have offered soft loans to farmers and youths.

‘’The beneficiaries are those wishing to engage in skills acquisition and various businesses in the state,” he said.

NAN reports that activities to mark this year’s event begin on Aug.11 in the state with an awareness walk from the State University’s first gate to IBB square, the venue of the event.

International Youth Day is celebrated each year to recognise the efforts of youths in enhancing the global society.

The event is also dedicated to celebrating young people’s contributions to conflict prevention and transformation as well as inclusion, social justice, and sustainable peace.
