Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, on Friday assured UNICEF of adequate support to boost awareness campaign on six months exclusive breastfeeding among nursing mothers.

The Sole Administrator of the council, Alhaji Hassan Makarfi, gave the assurance when he received an NGO, “Breastfeeding Mobilising Team” on a courtesy visit in Zaria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the group staged a rally in some wards in Zaria to alert women on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding..

Makarfi, who was represented by Head of Health Department, Alhaji Aminu Ahmad, described breastfeeding as a vital component of child health.

He commended the group and urged its members to sustain the campaign extend it to all areas in the state.

The leader of the team, Malam Murtala Iliyasu, said the rally was to create awareness among women on the relevance of six months exclusive breastfeeding.

The sole administrator also said the team had embarked on a house-to-house campaign to educate women on the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, not only to the children but also to mothers.

Iliyasu appealed to women to cooperate with the team to succeed.

A facilitator of the group,Dr Sani Hassan, advised the council to incorporate the team in all its health programmes, assuring that members of the team had been trained on the campaign.
