Senator Shehu Sani representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly has thrown his weight behind the nationwide strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

ASUU on Monday commenced an indefinite nationwide strike over government refusal to fulfill its part of the agreement it signed with the union in 2003.

In his facebook post on Monday, Senator Sani stated: ”First, I wholeheartedly support ASUU strike. Secondly, I call on the executive to dialogue and meet up the demands of the Union. Thirdly, the need to declare emergency on the state of public universities, polytechnic and colleges of education is now.”

ASUU in its, “Strike Bulletin No.1”, said the strike ”is to be a total, comprehensive and indefinite action whereby no form of academic activities, including teaching, attendance of any meeting, conduct and supervision of any examination at any level, supervision of project or thesis at any level should take place at any of the nation’s universities.”

The union listed the outstanding issues with the Federal Government to include: payment of fractions/non-payment of salaries; non-payment of earned academic allowances, non releases of operational license of NUPEMCO; non implementation of the provisions of the 2014 pension reform act with respect to retired professors and their salaries, removal of universities staff schools from funding by government and funds for the revitalisation of public universities.
