The Bayelsa Chapter of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) says it has concluded plans to hold a 6-kilometre road race for journalists in the state.

Its Chairman, Mr Alambo Datonye, on Wednesday in Yenagoa said that the race was to create a pathway for journalists to engage in physical exercise.

Datonye said the event had been fixed for Aug. 30 as part of the initiatives to promote sports, especially athletics.

According to him, participants will include all journalists in Bayelsa irrespective of their media.

“This is a new event in the state, we have made good plans for the race; we have no sponsors for now but in the subsequent ones, we may have.

“Well, some individuals are helping the association to ensure its success; I urge journalists to embrace it and give it total support. Physical exercise is as good as the food we eat,’’ Datonye said.

On the award of prizes, he said that plans were underway to decide exactly what to give; it can be money but we have not concluded.

“I have the hope that the programme will continue and stand as an annual event for journalists in the state,’’ he said.

The Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr Love-day Herbert, said the theme for the race is: “Promoting Sports and Healthy Living Among Journalists’’.

Herbert expressed optimism that the event would go a long way to enable journalists to keep fit.

According to him, the take-off point of the event will be at the INEC Junction and terminate at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Ovom, Yenagoa Local Government Area.
