An environmental sanitation mobile court in Sokoto metropolis on Saturday convicted 50 persons for allegedly flouting monthly sanitation regulations.

The Secretary to the mobile court, Malam Sharhabilu Muhammad, disclosed in Sokoto that the offenders paid fines ranging from N1, 000 to N1, 500 each.

Muhammad said offences committed included violating government movement restriction orders and opening of business premises within the stipulated period of sanitation between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.

He said that offenders were arrested at different areas in Sokoto town and arraigned in the mobile court.

The secretary added that the punishment was to serve as deterrent to others as government remained steadfast toward promoting public hygiene.

Also speaking, Malam Abdullahi Abubakar, the Public Relations Officer, State Ministry of Environment, said the exercise was hitch free and various voluntary groups and members of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) participated.

Abubakar said workers of State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) deployed vehicles to evacuate accumulated refuse.

He commended security agencies and the general public for their supports to the monthly exercise.
