Road Race: Registration of participants begins

The Bayelsa Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has begun the registration and medical screening of intending participants in its 6km road race on Aug. 30.

The association’s Chairman, Alambo Datonye, told newsmen on in Yenagoa that the registration and screening began on Monday and would end on Tuesday.

The race being organised by the Bayelsa SWAN for Journalists in the state was to promote sports and healthy living.

“The registration and screening is to check those that will participate and those that are physically fit for the exercise; the venue for the medical screening is the NUJ Press Centre, Azikoro Road, Yenagoa.

“The registration starts today (Monday) and will lasts till Tuesday by 9 a.m. and ends by 5 p.m.; so, all intending participants are advised to register, do their medicals and get their tags.

“We have also concluded the prizes to be given to the winners. After a meeting of the organising committee, we agreed that winners of the race in the men and women categories will smile to the bank with N15, 000 each.

“The runners up will go home with N10, 000 each, while bronze medalists will go home with N5, 000 respectively,’’ Datonye said.

He, however, said that the race would be flagged off by the state’s Commissioner for Sports at the INEC Junction on the Mbiama-Yenagoa Road by 7 a.m.

“Certified participants are to report at 6 a.m. and the race will terminate at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Ovom, Yenagoa Local Government Area for a ceremony and presentation of prizes,’’ he said.
