A teenager, Johnson Okeowo, who allegedly bought a stolen phone — Gionee C8 valued at N116, 000, was on Monday hauled up before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Okeowo, 17, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and receiving stolen property.

According to Police Prosecutor Anthonia Osayande, the accused committed the offences with another boy still at large on July 27 at  9.12 p.m. on Shitta Road, Surulere.

She alleged that the accused stole a purse containing a Gionee C8 phone valued at N116, 000 and N132, 000, belonging to the complainant, while she was walking on Shitta Road.

She said the missing phone was traced and found in possession of the accused.

“On investigation, he claimed that he bought it from a man simply identified as Sodiq.”

The offences contravened Sections 287 and 328 (2), (a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Aro Lambo granted him bail in the sum of N70, 000 with one surety in like sum.

He said surety should be gainfully employed with an evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.‎‎

Lambo remanded the accused at Abeokuta Correctional Institute for Boys pending the perfection of his bail condition.‎

He adjourned the case until Oct. 9 for mention.
