Education development depends on consistent govt. policies - Don

Prof. Olasheinde Williams of the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, has identified inconsistency in government policies as a factor affecting development in the nation’s education sector.

Williams made the assertion on Tuesday at a one-day seminar organised for teachers and principals in Secondary schools in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara.

The seminar, organised by Omu-Aran Development Association (ODA), attracted mathematics and English teachers, as well as those of other science-related subjects in schools across the community.

Williams, who spoke on: “Psychological Tips for Teaching Effectiveness”, said many laudable education initiatives of past governments were not given enough space to manifest their effectiveness and usefulness.

“We don’t allow every policy by every successive governments geared toward transforming the sector to manifest their usefulness and effectiveness.

“Every minister, commissioner and other officials at the helms of the sector tend to come up with different policy directions during their tenure.

“Since no nation can be said to be above the standard and level of its education development, there is every need to give our policy, right from the top down to the bottom, enough space to flourish and impact positively on the beneficiaries,” she said.

The don described today’s students as those interested in acquiring worldly material gains than craving for required knowledge needed to propel their future ambitions.

Prof. Ojo Oludare of Department of Arts and Education, University of Ilorin, in a lecture, said teachers need to be more emotionally involved in their assignments.

Oludare said the characteristics of today’s student remain different from those of yesteryears, and effective teaching in both public and private schools is very essential.

He described a quality and competent teacher as one that prepares ahead, takes perfect control of the situation and also learns new things to enhance his or her performance.

Chief Bisi Adeyemi, ODA President, in a remark, said the seminar was organised to boost the teachers’ skills and effectiveness.

He said the programme was also part of the association’s corporate social responsibility toward the socio-economic development of the community.

Adeyemi expressed optimism that the seminar would impact new techniques and methodology needed to enhance overall students’ performance.

He advised the participants not to rest on their oars by acquiring more knowledge in aligning with global acceptable standard in the sector.

Mr Adeboye Abodunrin, a participant from Omu-Aran High School, described the workshop as an eye-opener on new techniques in effective teaching and learning.
