Mrs Theresa Ibas, the wife of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) and President of Naval Officers Wives Association, (NOWA), Mrs on Friday inaugurated a skills’ acquisition centre in Lagos where women would be empowered. women .

According to her, the centre will help to alleviate the sufferings of widows and orphans of the naval family.

The centre was opened at the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) WEY, Navy Town in Ojo.

“One of the considerations in sitting the centre in Navy Town is the fact that the bulk of naval families reside there.

“Also, accessibility to several places where such training are done is very poor, and as such, many find themselves not engaged in any meaningful trade.

“It is hoped that with the pocket-friendly rates that will be charged for the various training, people will avail themselves the opportunity to acquire a skill,” she said.

Ibas noted that empowering women could make them become the driving force behind stronger economies.

“No silver bullet will eliminate violence against women, but a combination of efforts that address income, education and health can significantly reduce violence and its tragic consequences,” she said.

Ibas said that women’s contribution was crucial to the survival of households through which families can escape poverty.

“When women earn an income, they are more likely to spend it on food, education and healthcare of their children and families.

“We have uncovered effective ways to strengthen women’s economic contributions and reduce their vulnerability to poverty, especially, in the event of spouse demise,” she said.

Earlier, the Special Guest, Vice Adm. Ibok-Ete Ibas, who inaugurated the building, said the philanthropic activities of NOWA had continued to bring succour to the weary and needy.

He urged the women to make use of the facility in a responsible and sustainable manner while making use of the opportunity to acquire one skill or the other.
