Adekoya vows to sue Police IRT for unlawful arrest, maltreatment

The Personal Assistant to former council chairman in Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos state, Segun Adekoya who was arrested and detained by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team, IRT, of the Nigeria Police has vowed to head to the court for violation of his fundamental human rights.

While addressing the media on Wednesday, along side his lawyer, Adesina Ogunlana, Adekoya said he had suffered damage in one part of his ear and chest from the beating in the hands of operatives of IRT during the five days of captivity.

You will recall that Adekoya was arrested in Festac Town over unknown charges by operatives of the IRT and released on Saturday night.

He called on the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idrs to launch an independent investigation into his arrest with a view to ending illegal activities of some men of the Nigeria police.

 

On his part, his counsel, Ogunlana said there was urgent need to end the continued illegal arrests of innocent Nigerians by men of the Nigeria police, including the Special Anti-robbery Squad popularly known as SARS

He also charged the police boss in different states of the federation to always conduct a random checks on prisons and detention facilities in order to have first hand account of those in custody of the police

 

There has been growing concerns by Nigerians for the ban of SARS over what they called their illegal arrest and torture of innocent citizens
