Atinuke Hassan, the Creative Director of  House of  Tinurella, says  a regulatory body governing the make-up industry in the country is desirable.

Hassan told newsmen in Ibadan on Monday  that having a highly regulated industry would further strengthen the profession.

“There are persons who now parade themselves as make-up artists, which to me they are not;  all they do is to copy other people’s  work and parade them as theirs.

“They are the bad eggs in the profession, hence the need to set standards in order to have an industry filled with only professionals.

“I have been a make-up artist for five years and it hasn’t been easy.

“A lot of people think it’s a joke when you tell them you’re a make-up artist, they don’t take us seriously,  but now people are beginning to actually see it as a real deal.

“People are beginning to see that one can make a good living out of this profession, ” she said.

She added that people need to discover their talents and put it to maximum use.

“ There are no jobs out there and besides we all can’t work in the corporate world. We youths have to empower ourselves.

“Every youth should rediscover themselves and find that thing they love and make a living out of it.

“I’ve always loved makeup;  I used to do it for leisure when I was in the university, so toward  the end of  the NYSC,   I saw the need to empower myself.

“ I decided to make my passion my business  and  I went for a professional class and the rest is history. From time to time,  I go and  update my skills to be up to date.

“ The industry keeps evolving and it’s pivotal to get acquainted  with the latest trends, ” she said.

Hassan also said that one of the greatest challenges being  faced in the profession was  making people understand that  you need to place a price on your service.

` A lot of people think it’s make-up and at the end of the day,  they will wash their face off and that it shouldn’t cost much.

“ People need to change their notion about that because it’s more than that. The products used in giving them the desired results actually cost a lot, ” she said.

She advised aspiring make-up artist to know that passion is the most important thing in the profession.

“ If they go into a business solely because of money, they will give up easily when it’s not forthcoming initially.

“Passion will keep you there, also they should be consistent, develop yourself all the time and work hard, ” she said.

Hassan added that the availability of made-in- Nigeria make-up  products had  eased the stress and had reduced the expenses of make-up artists in the country.

“Having our Nigerian made products is a very good thing as this has eased a lot of stress of getting things abroad.

“ I am advocating that this should be  encouraged with  more companies producing  Nigeria make-up brands, ” she said.
