The Consumer Protection Council (CPC), says on Wednesday it has commenced nationwide campaign on consumers’ right to quality products and services.
The CPC Director General, Mr Babatunde Irukera, said during a courtesy call on Gov. Nasiru El-Rufai of Kaduna State, that the aim “is to address the issue of quality on the sides of consumers, manufacturers and service providers.’’
He stressed that, “quality itself is a consumer right, a consumer has right to the best quality.
“Although most rights are not protected, the campaign is on quality infrastructure project. It is to create awareness for consumers to know that it is their right to demand for quality.
“At the same time, we are to support the infrastructure work that has been done. We are going to states and sensitising people.
“It is very important wherever we go to engage traditional rulers and senior government officials so that together we work in inculcating the culture of quality in Nigeria.’’
Irukera further explained that “it is a demand and insist campaign’’, so that people would not be complacent on their right to quality goods and services.
“The consumer should demand and insist; it is their right,’’ he stressed.

According to him, the CPC target is to let consumers hold industries and service providers accountable.
The director general disclosed that the council would launch a complain portal where consumer can sent their complaints to make industries more accountable.
Irukera said the council was also engaged in the prosecution of a lot of cases involving those who sell adulterated products.
Responding, the governor, who was represented by his deputy, Barnabas Bantex said the state government was ready to support the CPC for the betterment of the state and country.
“The government is ready to give 100 per cent support to whatever is needed to achieve success,’’ he said, adding that the demand for quality is very vital to development.
The governor asked the CPC to provide details of the campaign and how the state government would key into it.
