Police Arrest 3 With Two Bags Of Indian Hemp

The Police at the Onikan Division on Lagos Island of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested three men for allegedly displaying two bags containing weeds suspected to be Indian hemp for sale at the Mammy Market, Dodan Barracks, Lagos.

A Police source said that the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in charge of Onikan Division directed a team Led by Supol Akio Umor to arrest the suspects following a complaint by the Market women at the Mammy Market that suspected Indian hemp hawkers were making life unbearable for them in the market.

The suspects are Godwin Elemi, 27; Ejike Orji, 33 and Emeka Eze, 35.

The suspects were arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate Court on one count charge of felony to wit, unlawful display of two bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp for sale at Mammy Market.

Police Counsel, Reuben Solomon informed the Court in charge No M/13/2018 that the accused persons committed the crime on 4 March, 2018 at the Mammy Market.

Solomon told the court that the accused persons were arrested for unlawfully displaying two bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp for sale at the Mammy Market and disturbing the peace of the market women doing business there.

He said the offence the accused committed was punishable under section 159 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the crime in the open court and their counsel, Uche Onwuekwe prayed the court to grant the defendants bail in most liberal terms with a promise that they would not jump bail if granted.

Magistrate A. Famoyibo admitted them to bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case till 26 March, 2018 for mention and ordered that the defendants be kept at the Ikoyi Prison, Lagos till they fulfilled the bail conditions.
