The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says it will collaborate with the Lagos State Government and private school owners on registration of minors for National Identity Number (NIN) across the state.

Mrs Olufunmilola Opesanwo, State Coordinator, Lagos West disclosed this during in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday.

Opesanwo said that the registration of minors would help to ensure speedy issuance of the NIN, population censor and effective planning and implementation of the countries budget.

“We will collaborate with the state government and the private school proprietors for easy registration of minors in primary and secondary schools across Lagos.

She said that the registration was for children less than 15 years adding that a 16-year- old could enroll on his own while a minor needed guidance of his or her parent or guardian.

“When the child have attained 16- years, he will now come and do modification for proper facial identity and ensure his details are properly captured since he has gotten the NIN,” Opesanwo said.

She said the commission planned to increase its enrolment centres adding that it intended to outsource the card production to agents.

The coordinator urged government to increase awareness on the importance of having NIN adding that it would soon begin enforcement and compliance of the NIN to the public.

Opesanwo blamed the delay in the production of identity cards to paucity of funds hoping that it would improve with the implementation of the budget.

“We are producing cards, we are distributing cards, and even now we are activating cards across the state.

“Henceforth, there will be tremendous increase in card production because we have the capacity to produce millions of it,” she said.
