State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB)

Teachers in Cross River have commended the state Universal Basic Education Board for its efforts at improving facilities in primary schools across the State.

A cross section of primary school teachers made the commendation on Thursday while receiving the Chairman of the Board, Dr Stephen Odey, and his team, who were on an inspection tour of some projects in the schools.

Mrs Comfort Obeten, Head Teacher of Holy Cross Primary School, Ugep in Yakurr Local Government Area, commended the board and the state government for the efforts toward restoring the past glory of basic education in the state.

She informed the team that the population of pupils in her school had increased due to the rapid transformation and acquisition of modern facilities by the state government.

“Honestly, we are witnessing a new era of transformation and this has led to a steady rise in pupils’ enrolment,” Obeten said.

Also speaking, Mr Eno Isong, the Principal of Community Secondary School, Mkpani, also in Yakurr, thanked Gov. Ben Ayade for providing a six-classroom block in the school.

Isong noted that the structure was provided after the communal clash between two neighbouring communities of Nko and Mkpani, which led to the loss of several structures in the school.

Mr Odey Joseph, a teacher at St. Theresa’s Primary School, Ipong, Obudu Local Government Area, also commended the Government and SUBEB for providing a conducive learning environment in the school.

“SUBEB has been doing a lot for us; last month, they brought a set of computers and solar panels.

“All these interventions by SUBEB has gone a long way to helping provide a conducive environment for pupils,’’ Joseph said.

In his remarks, the SUBEB chairman said that the board decided to embark on one week tour of projects in schools to ensure that contractors delivered on schedule and according to specifications.

He expressed satisfaction with the level of work done by some contractors handling the projects.

The SUBEB chairman said that the latest interventions by the state government would lead to the transformation of basic education in the state.

“The administration of Gov. Ben Ayade has introduced multi-storey classroom blocks and sick bays in Primary Schools.

“It has also introduced solar systems and computers in our school system.

“We are taking education in the state to the next level,” Odey said.
