Illegal Dumping: Lagos Seals Fisheries Coy

In its effort to salvage the health of Lagosians following the fire outbreak at Olusosun dumpsite, the Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of Vesa Fisheries, a company situated on Kudirat Abiola Way, Ojota for illegally dumping inflammable materials at the dumpsites which had been closed down by the Lagos State Government.

The Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti, gave the directive for the immediate seal up of the company on Monday when he met with the Assistant Operations Manager of Vesa Fisheries, Azees Kelani and other representative of the company, Osaro Eguamwense, at the conference room of the Ministry, saying that the immediate closure of the company was necessary to forestall further incidents at the dumpsite.

The Enforcement and Advocacy Department of the Ministry had, during its regular surveillance of the Olusosun dumpsite, discovered the indiscriminate dumping of materials, capable of aggravating the situation at the Olusosun dumpsite, by Vesa Fisheries in total disregard for the Lagos State Environmental Laws and the Closure order on the dumpsite.

Durosinmi-Etti stated that it was obvious that Vesa Fisheries under-declared the quantity and composition of its wastes and took advantage of its proximity to the dumpsite to violate the laws of the State and demonstrate disregard for constituted authority.

His words: “It is obvious that the quantity and components of wastes the company generates have been under-declared, because it deemed it convenient to covertly dump at the dumpsite”.

The Environment Commissioner said that the law would be allowed to take its course on the matter.
