5 teenagers in court over N116,000 theft

Five teenagers, who allegedly stole valuable items worth N116,000, were on Friday brought before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

The accused, Dare Adetunmubi, 18, Yusuf Ogundele, 17, Adekanbi Muyideen, 17, Tunde Adesanya, 16, and Rilwan Owolabi, 16, whose addresses were unknown, are facing a two-count charge of stealing and burglary.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Abdulkareem Mustapha told the court that the accused committed the offences on March 30 at about 11.30 a.m at Ijoko in Ota area of Ogun.

Mustapha alleged that the accused persons entered into the house of Toying Amstel and stole a gold chain valued at N45,000 and a cash of N71,000.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr Mathew Akinyemi, granted them bail of N100, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

Akinyemi said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed.

He also ordered that the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government, while their addresses should be verified by the police.

The case was adjourned until May 24 for hearing.
