North East: Group trains 160 traditional rulers on conflict management

The State Team Leader, Managing Conflict in Nigeria (MCN), an NGO, Sambo Abdulkadir has said that 160 traditional rulers including district, villages and ward heads had been trained on mediation and reconciliation in the North East.
He disclosed this in Damaturu in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.
He said the monarchs, who were trained on reconciliation and mediation, were selected from each of the emirates in the state.
Abdulkadir said that 160 scribes from of the traditional rulers were also trained in record keeping system to support the traditional rulers in keeping records.
“We learnt that with the problem of insurgency in the North East, some members of the communities are facing difficulties.
“In terms of whom to approach when they have problem among themselves, the MCN thought that it would be good to assist in the integration of communities to modernise the system of conflict resolution.
“The aim of the training was to equip the traditional rulers, district and ward heads to able to mediate and resolve disputes among their people in the various communities,” he said.
The Coordinator, Green Horizon Consultancy Outfit, Aminu Muhammad and one of the facilitators, Muhammed Kaugama, also said the programme had achieved to a large extent.
According to them, the traditional rulers and district heads have been equipped to handle some cases within in their communities.
Likewise some of the participants expressed their appreciations to the organisers of the programme.
A participant, Bulama Gana, said the workshop has been so helpful, saying that before now, they don’t keep records.
