What Nigerians use social media for

Since the emergence of social media in the 1990’s, people all over the world see it as a platform to network with the world for one reason or the other. It is a common sight to see people pressing their phones on the roads, buses, at home, schools even at their place of work chatting and uploading pictures on Facebook, twitter, Instagram, snap chat etc.

For many, there are just platforms to get social as the name implies, while away time and kill boredom. But for others, it goes beyond social activities.

Emmanuel, a University of Calabar student said “”Personally I use social media for information and leisure. Information on trending issues and news. As for leisure, I use Facebook when I want to relax and connect with old friends and chat but as for business, I’ve never used Facebook for it. Maybe because am still a student”

I liked a lot of newspaper pages on Facebook, through that i get daily upload of current happening and breaking news in Nigeria’.

For Phronesis, information is first then business and leisure. “I get information through online news vendors, groups and friends. On the business side, i advertise my products on my profile, page and convince friends to patronise me. I’m into clothing business”.

“I’ve make some sales through social media and am putting in more efforts to increase my customer base”.

Inspirational speaker, Lemon Angel is using Facebook to motivate, inspire and develop people around the world.

” I sometime use facebook for leisure to while away time. But my main goal is to use it to teach and help others through teaching of mind science and personal development. Mind science is the use of the mind through thought to achieve ones dreams. As a man thinketh, so is he. That’s what mind science is all about”. The feedback has being encouraging as people come to my inbox for help with life issues, mostly whites. Facebook is the platform i use to get my voice out”, he said.

Frank derives so much fun and entertainment from online fights and clap backs. He is on social media to make friends and also to know about new songs from music enthusiasts.

“I basically use social media to make friends, 90% of my friends are from social media. Presently, i don’t do business on social media. I get a little bit of information on Facebook. Information usually comes in form of gossip from people that will never mind their business”.
