The Lagos State Water Corporation (LSWC) has deployed over 17,000 prepaid meters in its first phase of installing water meters in houses.
The corporation’s Public Affairs Officer, Mr Rasaq Anifowoshe, made the disclosure in Lagos on Thursday.
“The areas that benefited in the first phase of meters installation are Lekki, Victoria Island and Victoria Island Annex.
“Others are Ikeja, Magodo, MKO Abiola Garden, Surulere, Yaba/Ebute Metta, Iwaya, Magodo, Ikeja and MKO Abiola Garden among others,’’ he said in a statement after the Ministry of The Environment presented its achievements on wednesday.
The ministerial briefing to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode is part of the activities to mark his three years in office.
The public affairs officer said Ambode’s commitment to meeting the people’s water demands had contributed immensely to the various successful projects in the water sector.
“The second phase will start as soon as new sets of meters are made available and will cover all the other local governments in the state.
“Apart from water consumers paying for the exact volume of water consumed, the meters will reduce water wastage by consumers,’’ he said.
Anifowoshe said the corporation had introduced various payment options such as LSWC mobile, ATM, POS and the internet.
He disclosed that the corporation had within one year, started and completed rehabilitation of some waterworks as part of efforts to provide uninterrupted potable water supply to citizens.
He said some of the completed projects include the rehabilitation of Ishasi Waterworks – 48 million gallons per day (MGD) mini waterworks, Iweke Iworo mini waterworks, 4MGD and 75MGD Iju and Adiyan water works.
The 4MGD Isashi water works serve Mile 2, Owode, Barracks, Alaba International, Old Ojo Road, Ajangbadi and other adjoining communities.
Anifowoshe also said that the 48 Mini Waterworks situated in different areas of Lagos serve Ikeja, Surulere, Onikan, Epe, Iponri, Badagry, Lekki, Victoria Island, Ajangbadi, Dolphin, Ikoyi, Badore, Apapa, Ikate, Shomolu, Alexandra, Magodo and Meiran among others.
He said the rehabilitation led to additional 10 million gallons of water per day as well as giving a boost to water supply in the last one year.
Anifowoshe said that the 45MGD Iju and 75MGD Adiyan were added to the water works to produce and supply at their optimal capacities.
He added that Akute intake supplied fresh water the major treatment plants of Iju and Adiyan.
The corporation also introduced Geographical Information System (GIS) and Asset Management for operational efficiency and management of infrastructure as well as water supply system, Anifowoshe said.
