Senegal have salvaged Africa’s pride at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia as the African side beat Poland 2-1 on Tuesday.
Senegal is the first African team to have won their opening match at this tournament as Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia all lost.
The Liverpool man waited for Gueye, who drilled a low shot at goal which took a huge deflection off defender Cionek, wrong-footing Wojciech Szczesny and rolling into the net.
Niang added a second goal for Senegal on 61 minutes to keep the African side safe.
On 86 minutes, Poland reduced the tally from a goal by Grzegorz Krychowiak, whose errant pass led to Senegal’s second goal.
The former West Brom loanee headed in from Hull winger, Kamil Grosicki’s cross towards the far post.
Despite having 61 percent possession and 11 shots at goal, with four shots on target, Poland could not break the Senegalese resistance, while their superstar, Robert Lewandowski was ineffective in the match.
Senegal are now join top of Group H, with Japan, who beat 10-man Colombia 2-1 earlier in the day.
