Members of Lagos State Youth Parliament have called on other youth across the country to make their impact felt in the 2019 general elections.
Speaking on behalf of other members of the Parliament, the Speaker, Rt. Honourable Seriki Muritala said that there is the need for the youth population to leverage on their huge numbers to effect desired changes in the coming elections.
He specifically advised youth to ensure they register with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and obtain their Permanent Voters’ Card in preparation for the 2019 general election.
The Speaker regrettably noted that a larger percentage of Nigerians don’t vote during elections, saying that the development has disclosed by INEC informed the Road Show and Sensitize Walk embarked upon by members of the parliament to tell the general public especially the youth about the importance of voting and the need for them to get their PVC before the elections.
According to him, the possibility of having free, fair and credible elections largely lies in the hands of the youth, hence the need for the youth to be vigilant and make informed decisions.
He also solicited for the cooperation of the youth to stay away from violence and shun other social vices capable of truncating their prospects in life.
Muritala added that all hands must be on deck to complement the efforts of the state government especially in ridding the state of all social vices that is assuming an alarming rate in recent time.
The Speaker specifically call for public support in respect of the Campaign Against Drug Abuse, (LASKADA) recently launched by the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to address the excessive and persistent self-administration of drugs without regard to medical prescription among youth.
He said that the LASKADA campaign should be a clarion call and a reminder to every individual, organization and the society at large to safeguard the future of the country.
He enjoined parents and guardians to give good parental care to their wards. “Parents must be very observant and pay cursory attention to their children’s behavior and be on the look-out for strange attitudes and behavioral changes that may be drug-induced.”
The youth parliamentarians took the sensitization campaign to several places across the State including Tafawa Balewa Square, Idumota, Ojuelegba, Ikeja among others
