Suspected fraudster sent to prison over Visa fraud

A suspected fraudster, Sunday Okoro, has been remanded at the Ikoyi Prison, Lagos till he fulfilled the bail conditions granted him by an Igbosere Magistrate's Court, for allegedly obtaining the sum of N550,000 from one Joy Daniel with the pretext of procuring a visa for her.

A suspected fraudster, Sunday Okoro, has been remanded at the Ikoyi Prison, Lagos till he fulfilled the bail conditions granted him by an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, for allegedly obtaining the sum of N550,000 from one Joy Daniel with the pretext of procuring a visa for her.

Police alleged that the accused failed to fulfill the promise and also failed to refund the money to the  complainant till date.
The order for his remand in prison was handed down by Magistrate B.I. Bakare after the accused pleaded not guilty to the five-count charge of felony to wit, obtaining money under false pretence, threat to life  and stealing preferred against him by the police at the Area A Command, Lagos Island, Lagos.

A police source alleged that the Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP in charge of Area A Command, Lagos Island, ordered Inspector Akeem Ajao and his team to arrest the accused following a petition by the complainant.
Police counsel, Sgt Fransisca Job told the court in charge No P/47/2018 that the accused committed the alleged crime on 17 November, 2017 at Amodu Tijani Close, off Sanusi Fafunwa, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Job said that trouble started for the accused when  the complainant reported to the police that the accused introduced himself to her that he was a visa consultant with the Canadian Embassy in Lagos and collected the sum of N550,000 and an international passport from her with the promise to procure a Canadian visa for her within three Weeks.
Job said that the complainant further stated that  after the accused collected the money from her, he failed to provide the visa and also refused to refund the money to her till date.
According to him, when the complainant inquired from the accused about the visa and  her money on the phone, he warned her to stop disturbing him about the visa or else he would kill her.
Job added that the offences the accused committed were punishable under sections 411, 168(d) 314(1)(a) and 280(1)(a)(b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the alleged crime in the opencCourt and Magistrate B.I Bakare granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum who must show proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Bakare adjourned the case till 18 July, 2018 for mention and ordered that the defendant be kept in prison custody till he perfected the bail conditions.
