An EU and Oxfam project in Katsina State has commenced a two day training of community based organizations on sustainable land management to enhance environmental conservation.
Dr Christo -Mary Udokang, the project manager who declared the training open in Sandamu on Tuesday said 707 participants drawn from seven local government areas of the state are participating in the training.
He said the participants would be trained on forestry management through consolidation of sustainable farming practices, natural habitation regeneration and ways to generate employment.
Udokang added that training also focused on awareness creation on the production of Moringa and Neem oil to generate sustainable income.
He explained that the training was part of the project being run by the two organisations on improving the fuel wood balance in the state, adding that the training is being held simultaneously in Daura, Sandamu, Maiadua, Dutsi, Baure, Mashi and Zango local government areas.
Malam Shehu Mohammed, one of the participants, described the training as timely and innovative, stressing that it would create thousands of jobs and alleviate poverty among rural dwellers.
He assured that the participants would make judicious use of the knowledge acquired during the training and commended the sponsors of the project for their foresight, saying that the project would impact positively on farmers and the environment.
The EU and Oxfam sponsored project, more than 6.5 million trees were planted and maintained in the six local government areas in the last four years.
