The State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in Gombe has commended the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu-Abubakar, for his numerous contributions towards education in his domain.

Mrs Zulaihatu Madugu, Acting Secretary of the Board, gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Monday in Gombe.

Madugu said the Emir had done well in enrolling the less privileged and orphans in school.

She said the Emir’s contributions had strengthened ongoing efforts of both the state and federal governments in the area of education in the state.

According to her, the gesture had led to reduction in the number of out of school children, previously used by some people to perpetuate crimes and other social vices.

“I commend our emir, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu-Abubakar, for assisting the less privileged, and children from Internally Displaced Camps (IDPs) to get the necessary education. Some children would have been roaming the streets but for the Emir.

“In 2017, the Emir enrolled over 1,500 children into school with their uniforms and materials for learning. He loves education; he has really proven that by giving children education, we are preparing them for competitive future.

Madugu noted that the school feeding programme of the Federal Government had also enhanced the enrolment figure of primary schools in the state.

A NAN correspondent who spoke to some Gombe residents confirmed that the emir’s support for children in the state was not limited to education, but included the health sector.

Also, Hajiya Aisha Gambo of Federal Low Cost housing estate, Gombe, confirmed that the Emir enrolled many children in different schools in 2017 and paid all their expenses.

She appealed to private organisations, traditional rulers and individuals to replicate what the Emir is doing in Gombe in their respective domains.
