The Ugandan government withdrew the charges against opposition politician Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, on Thursday.

Anxiety has gripped the east African country since Aug. 17 when Kyagulanyi and several other opposition lawmakerswere arrested during campaigning for a bi-election and allegedly tortured in detention.

They were facing charges of treason and weapons possession.

Uganda’s leader of more than 30 years, President Yoweri Museveni, has dismissed the reports of torture as “fake news.”

TV coverage showed supporters in the military court where he was due to be tried hugging Wine as the charges were withdrawn.

On Aug. 15, police said Kyagulanyi was arrested for obstructing the presidential motorcade.
