Igbinedion University Okada in Edo, said it would establish a patient safety institute to train health professionals to proactively identify early warning signs for reducing maternal mortality.

The university made the disclosure in a statement signed by Mr Olajide Ilogbo, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Friday.

It said the institution would carry out the project in partnership with Patient Safety Africa, an international Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), affiliated to the World Health Organization.

It added that the university had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the NGO.

It added that it would also develop templates for a 24-hour effective health institutional combat readiness for emergencies.

According to the statement, Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Lawrence Ezimonye made the disclosure when he received the President of Patient Safety Africa, Dr Asekhame Isemede, who paid him a courtesy visit.

It said that Isemedi expressed joy at the prospect of a partnership with the university, saying that the collaboration would enhance medical care and capacity of health personnel.
