Bus driver knocks down pedestrian on highway

A 30-year-old commercial bus driver, Wasiu Taiwo, was on Tuesday docked at an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’
Court in Ibadan for allegedly knocking down a pedestrian on a highway.

Wasiu of Lagbondoko area of Oyo, is being tried for reckless driving, driving against traffic and causing death of a pedestrian.

According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Sunday Fatola, the accused committed the offences on Oct. 1 at 10.30 a.m. at Moniya, Ibadan, on Ibadan-Oyo Expressway.

Fatola said Wasiu, who drove a Mazda commercial bus marked LSR 29 XS recklessly and knocked down Olawatoyin Ekundayo while crossing the road.

He said the incident was reported at Moniya Police Station by Felicia Oluwatoyin about 10.40 a.m.

The offences contravened Section 3 (1), 18 and 35 of Road Traffic Act, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The accused pleaded not guilty and his lawyer, Mr David Akinsanya, urged the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate Kehinde Omotosho granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until Nov. 26.
