A university don from the Federal University Of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Okanlawon Onagbesin, has call on the Federal Government to make sex education a course in schools, in order to educate the young ones
Okanlawon, who was the Chairman at the book Launching titled “I’m a lady now” held in Abeokuta, said there should be a subject called sex education apart from Biology, physics, Chemistry and other related courses.
“Sex education is very essential not only in Nigeria but all over the world, when things like this comes out, the health sector should pick it up and help to disseminate the information to schools and also encourage sex education.
“I am not sure if the level of sex education is high before now but this is the time to really instill in schools so that teachers, possibly psychologist can help to introduce that kind of course that will allow the young ones to know from young age before growing into young adult; it will help them even in future to select the right partners.
“Health service should pick things like this up and help to disseminate the information to schools and try to encourage sex education in schools. The book is very essential because the state at which the country is now, teenagers don’t know anything about sex, the book will help the girl to know about pedophiles,” he said.
Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Engr Obafemi Omokungbe in his Keynote address said he accepted the address without hesitation because the writer shared the same opinion with the writer.
His words. “For my years of working closely with young adults, students to be specific, I observed that majority of them often mismanaged situation when they are faced with challenges of life due to lack of information, adequate information for that matter.”
He added that lack of information resulted sometimes in irreversible situation in life, poor performance in academic work, poor choice of friends and even life partners.
“Furthermore, sex education is the provision of information about the body development, the functions, sexuality and building of relationships,” he said.
He, however, charged parents, teachers and guardians to ensure that they give their children or wards appropriate information at every stage to ensure a well-balanced adulthood.
“Every child should be taught sex education and should be introduced at a very early age,” he said.
