Bus conductor snatches N30,000 phone at knifepoint

A 32-year-old bus conductor, Amos Arimoro, charged with dispossessing man of phone worth N30,000 at knifepoint, on Tuesday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, who resides at Ofada Street, Mushin, Lagos, was arraigned before the Magistrate, Mr M.O. Tanimola, on a three-count charge of breach of peace, conspiracy and stealing.

Arimoro, however, denied committing the offence and was admitted to a N100, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

Tanimola, who gave the ruling, said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Earlier, Police Prosecutor Aondohemba Koti told the court that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 1 at Ofada Street, Mushin.

He said the accused also conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by attacking Mr Kolawole Oshoala to disposes him of his N30, 000 phone.

“The complainant was making a call when the accused who were on a motorcycle stopped and pointed a knife at him and demanded his phone and threatened to stab him if he refused to comply.

“The complainant surrendered his phone for fear of being killed and the accused sped off after collecting the phone.

“The complainant shouted `thief, thief” and people pursued them with another motorcycle; the accused was arrested while his accomplice escaped with the phone, ” the prosecutor said.

The offences violated Sections 168, 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Section 287 stipulates three years imprisonment for stealing while Section 411 prescribes two years for conspiracy.

The case was adjourned until Nov. 7 for mention.
