Adesoye, made the call on Wednesday in Lagos, at the 2018 Nurses Week of the Department of Nursing Services/National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), National Orthopaedic Hospital(NOHI), Igbobi, Lagos Chapter with theme: “Nurses, a Voice to Lead: Health is a Human Right”.

She said they should also understand the process of resource allocation and strategic planning.

“Competencies in these concepts will facilitate nurse’s participation in policy making and resource allocations in order to lead from the front line.

“This will transform them into a force for change in actualising universal health coverage for citizens of our great nation.

“Health of the citizens make an important contribution to economic development as healthy populations live longer and are more productive,” she said.

According to the official, unhealthy professionals account for a large proportion of total healthcare cost.

“Similarly, lower nurse staffing, increased workload and unstable nursing unit environments were linked to negative patient outcomes including falls and medication errors,” she said.

Adesoye said that the Lagos State National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) had enjoyed effective support of the state government, evidenced by the various requests the state government had met.
