ATBU lecturers defy ASUU strike, conducts exams

As the nationwide industrial action embarked upon by the Academics Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) enters day two, students of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi continue with their second-semester examination.

ASUU has announced the commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike with immediate effect. The decision was announced at the end of an emergency meeting on Sunday night. For Failure on the side of the government to honour the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, signed between the union and the federal government in 2017.

The students began their examination last week continued Monday and on Tuesday under the supervision of their lecturers, while others were sighted reading and attending to discussion session.

A lady Miss Aminu Ibrahim department of microbiology of the University said “we are in our second week of exams, the exams will be concluded on the 19th of this month November.

“As a matter of fact we don’t know ASUU are on strike because our exams is going on smoothly. Noting that “we are only aware of labour strike which was suspended.

“All the same we are begging them to allow us to finish our exams before joining the strike,” Ibrahim said.

Malam Ibrahim Giade students of Mechanical Engineering said that they are pleading with their lectures to allow them finished their exams before joining the strike.

“We are calling on our lectures to allow us to complete our exams before they join the nationwide strike, they should sympathise with us some of us come from far distance,” he said.

At the Bauchi state University Bauchi Campus, students are on break but lecturers come in and attend to some issues and left.

All efforts to get some of the lectures speak on the strike issue failed in the campus, all they said “students are on break.

On his part, the Chairman ASUU ATBU Bauchi chapter Dr Adamu Babayo said we will talk after our congress today.

“We will be holding Congress any moment from now we will brief you after the Congress,” he said
