Dr Aamo Iorliam, a startup entrepreneur and Managing Director of Aamorise Information Technologies Limited, has urged the Federal Government to enact laws that will tackle cyber-crimes.
He made the call on Wednesday in Abuja on the sidelines of the ongoing 11th edition of eNigeria Conference.
Iorliam defined startup as a newly emerged business venture started by individual founders or entrepreneurs to search for repeatable and scalable business model.
Such a venture, he says, aims to develop a viable business model to meet a marketplace need or problem.
He stressed that a law was, therefore, necessary to foster more internet-based economic activities for development.
Aamorise, who specialises in the development of digital surveillance software for law enforcement agencies, says laws can be effectively used to stem cybercrime.
According to him, when laws are enacted and diligently implemented, digitally facilitated crimes will reduce because citizens will be happy to do business online.
He added that “most of the time our digital economy is not effective because some people do not have confidence doing business online, while some will not even try it at all.
“This is because of testimonies by some people who fell into the trap fake websites.
“However, if there are laws and the laws are diligently implemented, activities of operators of such websites will be tracked down and perpetrators punished.
“Consequently, it will translate into making Nigeria a better country in terms of doing online business and the economy will definitely improve.
“Nigeria is trying in terms of putting in regulations that will actually solve these problems but we will really want the government to move a step further by concentrating more on laws that will tackle cyber-crimes.”
Iorliam commended the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) for organising the conference to bringing stakeholders to discuss trends in technology and allow startups to exhibit their products.
He, however, urged the agency to give room for more startups in subsequent editions to showcase their talents and also link them up with the
right partners in terms of funding.
He appealed to Federal Government to put more funding into startups to actually develop products that would not only help Nigeria but other African countries.
eNigeria is an annual international technology show with the objective of enabling stakeholders across Nigeria to discover new socio-economic opportunities provided by the advancement in technologies and innovation.
The theme for 2018 edition: “Promoting a Digital Economy in an Era of Disruptive Technologies through Effective Regulations”, where notable startup entrepreneurs were given the opportunity to exhibit their products.
